Sludge treatment
In Sweden we have strict requirements for wastewater treatment. The government has decided that by 2015, at least 60 per cent of the phosphorous compounds in wastewater shall be returned to the arable land. By using sewage sludge in farming we can achieve our goal within the stipulated time.
CERTIFIED SEWAGE SLUDGE FROM VA SYD
Since June 2009 the sewage sludge from the wastewater treatment works in Sjölunda, Klagshamn, Källby and Södra Sandby is certified according to REVAQ, a certification system for sewage sludge. Even before this, VA SYD had developed methods for sludge treatment and complied with all the legislative requirements.
WHAT DOES THIS CERTIFICATION MEAN?
The certification proves that VA SYD's treatment of incoming wastewater and sewage sludge fulfils the specified requirements in order to obtain higher quality and continual improvement. As nutrients are returned from the city to the rural area, the nutrient cycle is complete.
SP, Technical Research Institute of Sweden, is the authority verifying that the requirements are adhered to. They check the routine procedures of analyses, sampling, our handling of the discharge from other businesses connected to us, and their product treatment.
SP also checks that we have an ongoing project of continual improvements before they issue the certificate.
