Wastewater

We treat wastewater from Lund, Malmö, Burlöv, Vellinge and parts of Lomma, Staffanstorp and Svedala. The wastewater is purified in compliance with high environmental requirements before it is discharged into the sea or other waterways.

the wastewater treatment process

In order to supply drinking water and to ensure that the wastewater is properly treated, conduits, pumping stations and wastewater plants must be kept operational and in good working order. You will find more information about our different plants in the left-hand column.

THINK OF THE ENVIRONMENT BEFORE YOU FLUSH

All water is part of a never ending cycle. Only natural body waste and toilet paper can be flushed down the toilet. Don't flush or pour anything down the drain that is harmful to the environment.

  • Solvents and rests of paint and oils should be taken to an Environment Station.

  • Leftover or old medications should be returned to a pharmacy.

  • Rests of frying fat and cooking oil go into the trash bag, as well as cotton swabs, cotton wool, sanitary towels, tampons, cat litter, cigarette ends, snuff, adhesive plaster, etc.

LONG-TERM IMPROVEMENTS OF THE SEWER SYSTEM

The total length of the sewer systems in Lund, Malmö and Burlöv is 2,570 km. There are different types of sewers, called combined and duplicate sewer systems.

Housing areas built before the 1950s often have an original combined sewer system. This means that all wastewater (household sewage, rainwater and drain water) run in the same pipes. During heavy rains, there is an increased risk of flooding in the combined sewer systems. A duplicate sewer system is more reliable, and after the 1950s duplicate systems with separate stormwater (rainwater) and sewage (household wastewater) pipes were built instead.

During the last ten years we have focused on transforming and improving the combined sewer system. We are continuously striving to find long-term, sustainable solutions to treat all stormwater (rainwater and melt water).

To put it simply, we want to find alternatives to "big pipes in the ground". Using this new type of stormwater system means that the city is prepared for very heavy rain with an entirely different method. In the Eco City Augustenborg, a residential area in Malmö, there are several examples of the new stormwater system.

We have more to tell!

Did you know...?

NO TREATMENT AT ALL
IN THE OLD DAYS

A little more than a hundred years ago, sewers were starting to be built in Sweden. Before that, the wastewater was discharged untreated into the nearest water course. In the 1930s we began purifying the wastewater.

NOTHING DISAPPEARS

Nothing you dispose of down the drain just disappears. What is done at the wastewater treatment works is sorting and purifying the waste in the wastewater to make it easier for Nature to deal with.
