Malmö Stormwater Strategy
In Malmö we are working on other solutions to drain stormwater than the traditional method through pipes. This means that we primarily treat stormwater in open system solutions, for example ponds, ditches or various channel systems.
OPEN STORMWATER SYSTEMS
An open stormwater system reduces the strain on the other existing drainage systems. It also reduces the risk of flooding and erosion damages. Moreover, the open stormwater system contributes to a positive urban environment with increased biological versatility.
An open stormwater system can also be used to purify the water and minimise the pollution impact on the receiving waters.
Our open stormwater systems, together with a carefully planned elevation difference, are prepared for future climate changes to handle even extreme precipitation.
BROAD COOPERATION IN THE CITY OF MALMÖ
Within the city of Malmö an overall administrative project for developing a stormwater strategy has been carried out.
In the strategy the responsibilities of the different departments are defined, as well as design instructions for stormwater ponds, classification of stormwater and receiving waters, and how to take preventive actions to reduce the pollution content in stormwater.
