Stormwater

When there is a heavy rainfall the water has to go somewhere. Sometimes it’s too much for the sewer system and it overflows. To reduce the risks of flooded basements and other problems VA SYD is putting in a great deal of work on gradually improving the sewer system.

BOOK ON STORMWATER BY PETER STAHRE IN GREAT DEMAND

The writer is Peter Stahre, former deputy managing director at VA SYD and an internationally well-known personality within the field of stormwater. The book was published in the autumn of 2008 and has obtained international recognition. The transition of Malmö’s sewer system is described, from a traditional pipe network under ground to a sustainable urban drainage with open air, often picturesque, system solutions.

WATER INTO YOUR OWN GARDEN

In certain older urban areas sewage (water from toilets, bath tubs etc.) and stormwater (rainwater, rinsing water and melt water) run in the same pipes. We call it a combined sewer.

If you live in such an area you can make an effort for the environment and help to reduce the risk of flooded basements by discharging roof downspouts into your garden instead of down the drain.

RAIN CAN BE QUITE DECORATIVE

Rainwater can improve your garden! The water can be directed through pipes or slabs with channels (ränndalsplattor) to a small pond or a bird bath.

In some cases you can be financially compensated for disconnecting your rainwater pipes. Call VA SYD at 040-635 03 34 and find out if this applies to you.

PART OF THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT

Our goal is to make the rainwater an advantage instead of a disadvantage. A good example is the area Augustenborg where the ponds and canals were designed from the first to be a part of the stormwater system. We have also put in a lot of work on this in Fjärilsparken/Sundsbroparken and Svågertorp.
