Hard or soft water?
The water is hard or soft depending on how much calcium and manganese ions it contains.
Water with a high content of these ions is called hard water and water with a low content of these ions is called soft water. Hard water can cause lime deposits, for example on your sink or in the kettle.
In Sweden water hardness is measured in German hardness degrees, °dH (dH= Grad deutscher Härte), where 1 °dH equals 10 milligrams of calcium oxide (CaO) per litre water.
WATER HARDNESS
The city of Malmö receives 80 per cent of its water from Vombsjön and 20 per cent from the Grevie groundwater catchment. The hardness degree of the water in Malmö is 5-6 °dH , which is classified as semi-hard water.
Usually, the greater part of the municipality of Lund receives its water from Lake Bolmen in Småland. But during the renovation of the Bolmen tunnel Lund receives its water from Ringsjön (50 per cent) and the rest from Vombsjön (50 per cent). The water hardness level is approximately 7.5 °dH which is also classified as semi-hard.
PLACES ORDINARILY RECEIVING THEIR WATER FROM LAKE BOLMEN
Lund, Stångby, Odarslöv, Hardeberga, Flyingeby and the greater part of Södra Sandby are usually supplied with water from Lake Bolmen.
PLACES RECEIVING THEIR WATER FROM VOMBSJÖN
Dalby, Torna Hällestad, Genarp, Veberöd, Dörröd, Björnstorp and the middle zone of Södra Sandby (see list to the right) receive their water from Vombsjön.
The water from Vombsjön is softened to a hardness of approximately 5-6 °dH .
