Garden waste

If you have a garden or patio you also have garden waste. It could be dead leaves, hedge cuttings, windfalls, weeds or grass clippings. The garden waste should not be put into the ordinary bin. The best way to handle your garden waste is to compost it.

TWO DIFFERENT WAYS TO COMPOST

For residents in Malmö and Burlöv there are two ways to compost your garden waste:

  • Compost at home in your own garden.
  • Order a special bin for garden waste from VA SYD. We collect your garden waste and transport it to a central compost site at Spillepeng.

COMPOST AT HOME

If you compost in your own garden you will create your own eco cycle. Your garden waste is decomposed and the compost soil can be used as fertilizer for your garden plot and flower beds. Just remember that a garden waste compost needs care! If you want to have an effective, healthy and functioning compost, think of it almost as a pet! In order to get good and nutritious soil, the compost needs looking after, airing, re-digging and it must have the right humidity level.

SPECIAL BIN FOR GARDEN WASTE

You can also order a subscription for a special bin for your garden waste. We collect your garden waste and transport it to Spillepengen for composting.

COLLECTING THE GARDEN WASTE BIN

On collection day the bin should be placed within easy view, by a trafficable road and no more than two metres from the edge of your property. The road between the bin and the place where the truck stops must not be blocked by gates, steps etc. Put the bin in place no later than 6.30 a.m. on collection day.

Frozen garden waste

If you have a subscription for a garden waste bin, you will have noticed that when the temperature is below zero degrees centigrade, the garden waste could freeze and get stuck in the bin.

One tip is to put some twigs in the bottom of the bin. This will help to prevent the garden waste from freezing and getting stuck. If it does get stuck, you can use a pitch-fork or a spade to break the garden waste loose from the bin.

You are responsible for making sure that the garden waste does not get stuck in the bin. If there is any frozen material stuck in the bin after an ordinary collection, it will be left in the bin.
