Food waste disposer
In the municipalities of Burlöv, Lund and Malmö you can connect your food waste disposer to a storage tank for separate treatment of the ground food waste. It is not permitted to connect the food waste disposer directly from your kitchen to the drainpipe.
General regulations for the use of public water and sewage systems (Allmänna bestämmelser för brukande av den allmänna vatten- och avloppsanläggningen, ABVA)
SEPARATE STORAGE TANK SYSTEM
The food waste disposer must be connected to a separate system with a storage tank. The storage tank is emptied regularly and the food waste transported directly to the biogas generator at the wastewater treatment plant.
Such systems are installed in for example Västra hamnen in Malmö where food waste disposers were introduced during the "European Housing Expo Bo01 – City of Tomorrow" and in Turning Torso.
USING ALL THE ENERGY
Through this process we can use all the energy from the food waste that is passed through the food waste disposers, produce more biogas for vehicle fuel and use the sludge residue as organic fertiliser.
MORE EXPENSIVE TREATMENT
Installation of food waste disposers directly on the sewer system is permitted in some municipalities. This is not allowed in Burlöv, Lund or Malmö because of the network structure. Because of the flat landscape, the sewer system has only a slight inclination. This makes transportation of ground food waste more difficult.
Even if the sewer system could transport the food waste to the wastewater treatment plants, the treatment process would be more complicated and expensive; it would require more electricity and chemicals.
